I am looking for pros and cons of the different brands of Satallites and services for RVs. What do you recommend?

We use Direcv. We have It at home and just take a couple boxes on the road in the motorhome. We use a KVH in motion sat. so we can watch going down the road and that particular type of satellite isn't real compatible to Dish. Tried it, didn't like it.

We use Dish in the MH and home base. Our satellite is a KVH standard (not in motion) on a 06 Discovery. Our reciever cost 7$ per month and is pay as you go. Can have reciever deactivated when home for the summer. Was told by dish and KVH that I would only get 2 satellites and only SD channels, but found that we get 4 satellites (one at a time) and plenty of HD channels.

Hey,  we have had Direct TV for 10 years.  It sure is alot easier to set up and bring in than Dish.

We have Dish for our satellite TV.  I chose Dish because Dish offered a month-to-month service so we only had to pay for the months we were out in our coach.  I installed a Hopper with Sling and two Joey’s so all three TV’s were usable with DVR service.  I also installed a Traveler 1000 satellite dish which is not an in-motion system but has a larger dish and provides significantly better reception than an in-motion system.  I recently retired and we are out in the coach most of the summer and my Dish service is fulltime now.  I got rid of my cable at home and put up a dish on the house and simply move the Hopper from the coach to the house for the winter and discontinue my cable service to save some money.  Don’t know about Direct TV or others.

    (our POST FROM  2012)

We have been DISH customers since 2001.  We have always taken our reciever from home when we traveled and used an outside dish to the  auxillary connection in our service compartment.  Local channels from our home area (KY) were never a problem until 2007, even in FL or IA.  Then when we couldn't get them and contacting Dish they told us the government rules had changed and you had to receive local stations from the Marketing Area in which your receiver was located.

They sent us a 'Dish Network Proof of Ownership Form' which we filled out and faxed to them with a copy of our then current MotorHome registration.  Since that time when we are away from home we take our DVR with us and when connected to satallites 110, 119 and 129, phone to tech support and give our location address and site number to receive the local channels.   As previously stated by others not all techs are knowledgeable in the switching procedures.  This time the tech reformatted our hard drive which resulted in loosing all our previously recorded programming!  I guess I will no longer try to educate the 1st line techs and request a supervisor for switching locals or as previously suggested, request an RV tech.

UPDATE: We are experiencing more knowledgeable 'tech' service the last year with no problems!

I have a 2008 discovery with in motion satellite.  Can anyone tell me where the on/off switch might be located.  I haven't used this dish yet. Just got the MH in Nov and just returned from a long trip. (5000 miles round trip).  Didn't use satellite at all. Wife wouldn't let me because she was afraid we wouldn't be able to dvr our programs.  We have direct TV. Camping world was't very helpful on this topic during the walk through.  It's a KVH brand.

On our 06 Discovery, the satelite power switch is above the drivers seat window cabinet. There are 2 switches close to the top on the left hand side looking at the open cabinet. One has a little light above that will turn solid green when locked on a satelite. The other is the power switch. When you turn it on, you should hear the dish start searching. Not sure you will be able to use your DVR
