Refrigerator LP or Generator

    Couldn't find an existing topic.
    Whats your thoughts about traveling with the refrigerator on LP or generator. I'll be traveling about 4 to 5 hours. I get pro's and con's not a definite answer

    We traveled with a dual power ref for 8 years and always had it on LP when we were on the road without a problem.

    For over 20 years we.ve always traveled on LP & have never had any problems.

     

    You will find people on both sides.

     

    NOTE:  If you do not open frig. door while traveling, everything will be fine for your travel time w/the frig OFF.

    The temp. will only drop a degree or two.

    Our understanding about this is that if you are involved in an accident then you have an open flame and an open gas bottle valve. Is it worth the risk?

    For years we traveled with the propane on until we attended a seminar at an FMCA rally where the dangers of doing so was discussed....particularly in case of an accident.  An insurance agent at the seminar also indicated that not all policies will cover fire loss due to an accident if the propane is on...which was confirmed by a person in the audience.  

    In any case we now turn the propane off at the tank every time we travel... rarely use our generator on the road... and even after 6 - 8 hours, our refrigerator is fine.

    We have been full timing for nearly 15 years now.  We travel on average of 6 to 8 hours a day during the summer and  do not use LP or Generator.  We run our refrigerator on the inverter.  We have never had a problem and don't have to worry about the LP.  Roy and Hannelore Shoemaker

    10k road miles over the past two years, with the refrigerator powered by LP (except for rare 120VAC nights). Have had no problems. Adsorption system is slow to cool down, and is finicky about leveling (front/back more than side/side), but it holds the freezer at a steady +5F and the refrigerator at +40F even in the desert heat of +110F. Further, LP gas consumption is very modest. I don't worry about collision damage; anything damaging the LP lines would involve a massive damage to everything else (LP lines run along main frame channels). If the flame goes out, the gas valve will shut off. Probably the most vulnerable area of a Class A is the LP tank itself; usually on the side, outboard of the vehicle frame.
