Generator self-starting when set to manual

Found my generator running this AM with it set to manual and 2016 Excursion still connected to shore power..  Looks like it was running for 5-6 hours. Turned off OK with the dash switch. Batteries all appear good. Control panel showed no elec service when generator shut down but I didn't give it any time for the ATS to switch to shore power. Not sure if there is a built in delay there. I cycled the shore power breaker and wiggled the cable connection at the box. Shore power appears on and normal.  I did notice a dead grass streak near the gen exhaust pipe so this may be a recurring issue and I've just not been there when its been running.

Any thoughts as to why the generator would start on its own when set to manual?  Also how do I disable the generator completely should this be a recurring problem in advance of getting it fixed? Don' want to annoy the neighbors.

Not sure why it would start in manual, however it sounds like it was responding to the requirements of auto-gen. If shore power is lost while any of the parameters to start under auto-gen the generator will start and run until that parameter is met. Even if power is restored from the shore connection, if for example the air conditioner is running the generator will continue to run until the air conditioner turns off.

If for some reason your generator "thinks" it is in auto-gen you could go into the settings and disable the settings that tell it to start under auto-gen.
