Check Engine Light and limited power

I have a 2001 Expedition with a Cummins turbo diesel with 14000 miles.  Returning from a recent trip the light came on and I checked the oil, coolant and fuel filter and strainer and everything was OK.  After driving about six hours the engine began losing power and was rough with full throttle.  I also noted that the tachometer was not working being stuck at 1250 rpm.  We were 60 miles from home and getting off the X-way and driving on surface roads I was limited in throttle as if I attempted to apply full pedal the exhaust  was pouring grey smoke which would stop as soon as I reduced pedal position.  We were able to get home by gently application of throttle and forcing the trans to shift by lifting the pedal.

The next day I started the engine with out any problem and the check engine light was off and the tach was functioning properly.  A  test drive showed everything normal and good power output.

My question is:  It appeared that the engine was in a "Limp In Mode" allowing me to drive home but limiting speed.  Is there a way to determine what the Check Engine Light indication was reporting and has anyone else experienced this type of issue.  As I stated, the engine runs fine now but it was difficult at night attempting to get off the road.

Just curious, have you taken it to a shop to have the computer scanned for the failure code?

I wrote to FCCC ( Freightliner forum ) the following

The reason of my email is to request guidance, because I am experiencing a problem with my 2008 Fleetwood Bounder

While returning from Florida the RV ABS light came on and I shut off the RV and I could not start the engine again.

The panel gauges lights came  real bright and stay on even with engine off, all my batteries are good. When I try to start the RV I could hear a click sound to the rear, but RV does not start or the panel gauge lights come off.

Your assistance on this matter is greatly appreciated. Please HELP

    Response rcvd from Freightliner

The abs system can not cause the unit to not start.

Are you sure you put the unit in neutral before you shut the engine off? Look at the shifter display, it should be in neutral. Is the shifter backlighting lit up?

If all is good, you may want to disconnect the engine batteries for a couple of minutes, to reset everything

We have a 2014 American Revolution and also had a problem with gauges going whacky, called Freightliner while on the road and told to disconnect all batteries and wait for couple of minutes and turn back on, Started engine and everything worked.  Was told maybe a glitch and could happen again in a week or not.  If it does, need to have checked at Freightliner.  So far, we have not had a problem since.
We were in Canada outside Quebec when this happened early summer.  Back in Florida and as now, no problem.  Hope yours was a easy fix as this was for us.  Thanks

For that no starting issue. I had that problem after we stopped for lunch in a rest area on the way home one trip. (1999 Bounder 36S)

I checked the neutral safety switch and the ignition switch what I could and finally since we were only an hour from home I slide under and jumped the starter solenoid.

the next week checking for something else I noticed a wire broken on one of the two solenoids (square things on the frame rail)

I hooked it back up and all was good again.

This is probably a needless question, but have you have you checked DEF tank?
