Engine shuts off

We own a 1988 Tioga Class C built upon an E350 Ford Chassis.  During a recent 5,000 mile trip the engine shut off on its own on 3 different occasions.  This is more than a little disconcerting when in heavy traffic or on a busy interstate highway.  Each time I was able to place the shifter in 'Nuetral' and restart the engine.  Does anyone have an idea why this is occurring?  Other than this problem the vehicle runs very good, there is only 40,000 miles on this motorhome.

It sounds like your fuel pump may be going out.  I had a 1997 Bounder that had the same symptoms.  Eventually it failed completely leaving me stranded.  Given the age of your coach, it may be starting to fail.   It may not be an easy/cheap to fix but it is better to take care of it now vs. a breakdown on the side of a road and an expensive tow.

    Doug:

Thanks you for the information.  I had not thought about the possibility of low fuel pressure.  I will get this checked out.  I would not want to get stranded out on the road waiting for a fuel pump for a 1988 era camper.  Do you know what the fuel pressure needs to be to run properly for a 1988 E-350 with a 460 cu. in. engine?

I thought it was the ignition switch as when I restarted the engine I think that the switch was in the "off" position.  Will probably have this checked out at the same time.

    Thank You Kindly.  Dennis
